Detectives Damian (Brian Krause) and Frank (Dane Rhodes) investigate an
especially gruesome murder spree where the killer leaves no useable clues,
and that seems to be based on some demonic ritual. And the more they
investigate, the more bizarre this ritual sounds. Thing is, the more they
investigate, the closer it hits to home with Damian, until he finds one of
the murder victims to be his mother in law (Lara Grice) - with whom he had
an excellent relationship by the way. He's taken off the case because of
that, but continues to investigate and soon uncovers a clue leading to one
Ian Parrish (Jared Bankens), whom he manages to corner before walking into
an ambush - and it's inexplicable why Parrish doesn't kill him, too (for
the time being). But Frank and the police force as such do nothing to back
him because Damian has overstepped his boundaries. However, Damian isn't
one to give up just because of technicalities like the law, but the closer
he gets to the truth, the more disturbing facts he finds out - first and
foremost about himself. And when his wife (Kate Tumanova) is abducted by
Parrish and whoever's behind him, he knows he has to strike - even if with
all he has found out, he hasn't got the first clue how ...
The Demonologist sure is an effective horror thriller
that really manages to tell an a bit far fetched story in a very engaging
way, thanks to expert pacing with all the shocks and suspense sequences in
all the right places, an emphasis on atmosphere over gross-out details,
sparkles of gothic creepiness where they're needed, and of course a
relateable and down-to-earth cast to ground the over-the-top narrative.
Very solid genre entertainment for sure!
