A tanker gets caught up in an accident and its driver (Romo
Gorrara) ends up killed, but then the tanker turns out to be
stolen, and the actual tank appears to have been remodeled as a sort of
team bus. There's also a knocked out lady in the tank, who mysteriously
disappears. A little spoiler here, it's never actually explained why this
lady was in the trunk, and knocked out at that, but a lighter she must
have dropped is all the leads Jason King (Peter Wyngarde), Stewart (Joel
Fabiani) and Annabelle (Rosemary Nicols) from Department S have in this
case, a lighter Jason quickly tracks back to his poker partner Cortoli
(Bill Nagy) in Rome - and Cortoli can give Jason the identity of the
mystery woman, one Veronica Bray (Patricia Haines), whom Jason tries to
pick up - only to be knocked out by her jealous boyfriend Taylor (Simon
Oates). However our heroes remain on Veronica's trail, and Jason and
Stewart follow her to the South of France, where wouldn't you know it
another tanker's stolen. Stewart tries to pick up Veronica, and with more
success, too, as he manages to knock out Taylor before Taylor can knock
him out. Then Veronica wants to make Stewart her accomplice in a 2 million
Pound heist - but unfortunately ends up killed before she can spill the
beans. But Annabelle can figure out from some of Veronica's seemingly
innocent photos what that heist will be: The heist outfit - now led by
Taylor - will enter the Paris-Orly airfield inside the tanker, approach an
airplane supposed to carry 2 million in gold, and pretty much snatch the
loot without anybody knowing. But Department S do know, and once the heist
has succeeded, Jason and Stewart simply carnap the tanker and deliver the
baddies and their loot right into the arms of the French police.
Now if you're looking for clever writing ... you really want to go look
elsewhere, as the premise of this episode in itself is already
far-fetched, and the many plotholes and leaps of logic don't help one bit
either. But at the same time it's also such a joy to watch for its late
1960s coolness, for one in the character Jason King of course, but also in
its decadent locations, macho posturing, sexy women, carefree (and by
today's standards often politically incorrect) humour and the like. So, not
great - but a great time capsule for sure.
