Inspector Jai Dixit (Abhishek Bachchan) is after a particularly vicious
gang of bank robbers whose trademark are one one hand their extremely
daring heists and on the other that they always use flashy motorbikes for
their getaways. The only lead Jai has though is Ali (Uday Chopra), a top
mechanic and champion motorbike racer but otherwise a complete loser who
is constantly looking for the right woman and who thinks he has found it
in the inspector's wife Sweety (Rimi Sen) - thing is, Ali has nothing to
do with the gangsters apart from having repaired annd tuned up their bikes
without knowing who they are ...
Eventually, Kabir (John Abraham), the leader of the gang, gets more and
more daring, so much so that he even announces their next heist to Jai,
challenging him to catch them, and since he is a good sport, Jai puts his
career at stake.
The heist takes place during a big concert, and before Jai's very eyes,
the gang really does get away, and Jai is only able to shoot one of them
dead. Then Jai has a showdown with Ali, who he thinks has created a
diversion when he suddenly shared the stage with singer Sheena (Esha
Deol), and the two men duke it out on the stage, before the audience and
TV-cameras. On the next day though, Jai resigns, while Alin is completely
disillusioned by his friend the cop, and the police in general.
It is not long before Kabir shows up on Ali's doorstep and invites him
to join the gang and fill the empty space - and Ali gladly accepts,
especially when he learns that singer Sheena is part of the gang as well.
Their next heist takes the gang to Goa, to rob a hotel-cum-casino by
taking several key jobs in the hotel or posing as guests. Kabir however is
shocked when he finds Jai among the hotel's guests. Still, the heist goes
as planned, it's only afterwards that Jai has them all arrested ... but
how did he know ?
Through Ali of course, who is not really a crook but an undercover
agent, and he has made a great job of securing the loot and apprehending
Sheena. But then the lights go out and the gang somehow manages to make a
getaway (inexplicably none of them were handcuffed) on their motorbike.
First thing they want to do once escaoed us ti shoot Ali, but fortunately
Jai interferes.
The rest of the film is an extended chase speedboat vs truck, during
which the speedboat eventually even takes to the street, followed by
extended fistfighting on a speeding truck. In the end of course, good
triumphs over evil, and Kabir, realizing there's no way out for him, races
his bike off a cliff ...
Very mediocre action flick, that features a few nice setpieces
(especially the chase at the end), but is seriously marred by a muddled
screenplay that takes ibncredibly long to set up its very simplistic
storyline, and by its lead performances: Abhishek Bachchan's character in
fact is way too one-dimensional to really be brought to life, but Uday
Chopra as the a bit dim-witted loser with a heart of gold is simply
obnoxious, terribly hamming it up and trying to be funny when quite clearly
he isn't. A way too flashy direction doesn't help the film one bit either.
Not totally bad but rather a waste of time.
