It was supposed to be nothing but a Christmas-themed drinking game
among teenagers when one of them, Chance (Norma Mendiola), suggests to do
a "naughty list", with each of them putting their darkest secret
on a piece of paper ... but then Chance claims the game is real, and when
an elf doll appears to whoever it is from their midst, they have to either
follow the elf's (usually pretty malevolent) instruction, or they die in a
way related to their darkest secret. At first, nobody takes it seriously,
but then Cali (Melissa L. Vega), guilty of a hit-and-run incident, is
killed in a car crash, Tiffany (Erika Martinez) almost overdoses on
cocaine. The others are soon visited by the elf as well, and deal with it
with varying degrees of success, but only Clover (Deanna Grace Congo) and
Leah (Stephanie Marie Baggett have the smarts to actually try and track
down Chance, who started it all - but all they learn is that she, too, is
a small part of a bigger game, and she doesn't have any idea how to get
out either. What makes the situation even more dangerous though is that
another supernatural killer, the Krampus-like Christmas Reaper, has
entered the scene, butchering those who haven't yet been killed by the
elves ...
Yes, Elves is a slasher, and it doesn't for one moment
try to deny or even hide the fact, and truth to be told, sometimes its
overly ambitious premise gets a bit in the way of things. But that said,
while not exactly the re-invention of the wheel, it's a pretty
entertaining formula movie, as it takes itself seriously enough to bring
the elves-theme across convincingly without falling back on post-modern
irony, and it has all the suspense, jump scares and violence in all the
right places to keep the viewer glued to the screen. And of course, a
solid cast doesn't hurt one bit, either.
