For their holidays, Hannah (Stacey Weckstein) takes her daughter Esme
(Audrey Grace Marshall) to the farm she grew up in to meet Emily - but who
Emily is other than she has known her since childhood, Hannah never
discloses. Arriving at the farmhouse, Esme is surprised to find it
completely dilapitated, all the canned food in the place they planned to
rely on has long gone bad, and there's no sign of Emily. And still, Hannah
can't stop talking about her. But Hannah has gone a tad weird since their
arrival at the farm, for one, she starts to obsessively dig for remnants
from her childhood (quite literally), neglects her daughter more and more
- to the point where she at one time almost lets her drown in a nearby
pond, and she pushes their car over a cliff, just to prevent their
departure. And she starts to see Emily, but always in the distance. Esme
grows more and more worried about her mother, and about herself, really,
and eventually does some (figurative) digging on her own, eventually
finding out that Emily has long died. And if she was worried before, now
Esme swtiches to panic modus ... A pretty unusual piece of
horror cinema, as it's a film that refuses itself to conclusive
interpretation and doesn't even try to answer all questions - especially
since exactly these unanswered questions are the trigger for all the
tension and suspense. And a very atmosphere-heavy directorial effort that
gets the most out of its impressive and impressively haunting location
gives the film an almost dark fairy tale feel, while the miniscule cast
give believable performances and have strong chemistry with one another
that's really needed for the story. And all of this results in a pretty
awesome piece of genre cinema.
