Myra (Carmen Anello) and James (Owen Lawless) did have their
difficulties in the past, which included him having furious fit and her
having an affair - but they really want to make their relationship work
again, and decide to spend some time in James's long deceased
grandparents' (Lynn Lowry, Bruce Smith) cabin deep deep deep in the woods.
And for the most part, their plan seems to work, they get through a lot of
stuff relationship-wise - but that said, Myra's also pretty freaked out by
the great outdoors, and she thinks he hears voices deep in the woods. And
the scary story James eventually tells her about his grandparents does
little to calm her nerves. And then, while out fishing, James is bitten by
something, something neither of them have seen before, and from that day
onwards he changes - for the worse. At first, it's only that he isn't as
good as he was at controlling his rage, then his body starts to change,
too, and he turns into ... something. And Myra, even if she has all the
opportunities in the world to escape, decides to stay with the man she
loves, for better or worse - and it gets way way worse ... True,
Exposure might be a bit slowburn when it comes to delivering the
goods, but that doesn't really matter because it's carried by great
camerawork making perfect use of the locations, very solid central
performances, and a subtle directorial effort to still totally suck one
into the story. And the monster finale sure as heck packs a bunch, with
awesome creature makeup and everything! Plus the throwback feel of the
movie is sure to strike a chord with genre fans.
