Ohyaku (Junko Miyazono) is a tightrope dancer who is good enough in
what she does - but her boss forces her into prostitution for some extra
dough. And when she refuses to have sex with Sengoku (Koji Nanbara),
president of the mint and one of the most influential men in the region,
she and her boss have a fall-out, and she hooks up with Shin (Kunio
Murai), a Robin Hood-like samurai who plans to rob a gold shipment meant
for the mint, basically to teach Sengoku, who is corrupt to the bone, a
lesson. Shin and Ohyaku soon fall in love and plan the raid together. What
they don't know though is that Hyoei, an accomplice of Shin who's also a
little bureaucrat in the mint, is quick to betray them to Sengoku because
it would mean his promotion. So Sengoku has Shin and Ohyaku steal his
gold, then he has it stolen from them for his own needs and takes them
both prisoner. While he tortures Shin, he rapes Ohyaku, and while
beheading him, he has her sent to a prison island. She vows revenge,
though ... On the prison island, Ohyaku soon makes friends with the
toughest guy around, Bunzo (Koji Sekiyama), and she attracts the attention
of Omon (Yuriko Mishima), the bisexual tattooist wife of the prison's head
warden Ganjuro, who tattoos a demon on her back and forces her into
submission - or so she thinks, anyways ... One day, a gouvernment
official pays a visit to the island, and it turns out to be noone else but
Hyoei, who has fallen up the career ladder after having sold out his
friends. Hyoei wants to get his hands on Ohyaku (quite literally) with
Omon's help, but that's where Ohyaku sees her chance to escape: First she
persuades Ganburo to kill Omon, help her escape and make her his wife,
then she kills Hyoei when he finds Omon's dead body, and finally she
brings Bunzo along for her escape to take care of Ganburo. Back in
Tokyo, she plans an all-out attack on the mint to have her revenge on
Senguko and the whole corrupt system, and with the help of Bunzo and a
sympathetic gangster boss (Tomisaburo Wakayama), she succeeds, too, and
she beheads Senguko the way he has beheaded her Shin before setting the
mint on fire and escaping with the gold ... Female Demon
Ohyaku is a fun film that might start out as a slightly sleazy drama,
but it turns darker with every plottwist, and a directorial effort that
puts atmosphere over action (rather an exception with this kind of movie)
and a solid cast only help bringing the story to life. Recommended.
