Ryota's brother was one of college basketball's greats, but he died
before his time. And now it's up to Ryota to fill his boots. But being a
bit of a hothead, he might not have the discipline for it, and he also
lacks his teammates' respect, especially when he goes for unorthodox game
moves, even when they prove successful. So despite of his apparent talent,
he not only has to train hard but also work on his attitude to step our of
his brother's shadow ... Now first and foremost it probably
helps to be into basketball and/or the Slam Dunk manga this movie's
based on, and admittedly I'm neither. But even if not, and if you can
forgive the slightly clichéed plot, there's a lot to enjoy about The
First Slam Dunk, as it's expertly animated and edited, turning very
realisticly conceived basketball action into very emotional action
sequences and as a result high drama. And even if you couldn't care less
about the sport, it's a film that sucks you into its world, absolutely
lets you feel what's going on, and for that it's well worth a look for
sure.
