Arianna (Tania Bambaci), her boyfriend Stefano (Mike Cimini), and
Roberto (Gianluca Vannucci) have been thieves since childhood - not
because they're essentially bad persons, more out of necessity. But even
though Roberto might be a coked up pest these days, they've always sticked
together. And their latest coup is the raid of a goldsmith's house, to
empty his lab - only once in his house, the lab's nowhere to be found, so
much so that they wake up the goldsmith, Antonio (Giuseppe Pambier), and
his wife, Giovanna (Stefania Casini), to torture the location of the lab
out of them - and with some success, too, as the house does indeed contain
a (secret) lab that' full of expensive jewellery. But once our three
heroes are inside the lab, the door automatically closes, locking them in,
and suddenly they find Antonio and Giovanna in full control of the
situation. Thing is, it soon turns out they're not even there by chance,
the goldsmith and his wife actually know their names, and know their
secrets, and now they play one against the others - and things get so out
of hands in the lab that eventually Roberto shoots Stefano in self
defense. While Giovanna and Antonio are somewhat distracted though, Roberto
and Arianna find a secret panel in the lab that seems a way out. But
following the stairs behind the panel, they find themselves in a dungeon
that seems to serve as a bizarre operating theatre - and it might be that
the problems they thought were over when escaping the lab have only just
begun ...
The Goldsmith is a pretty unique blend of psycho
thriller and horror, for one because it manages to surprise its audience
pretty much from square one on, for the other because even though based on
a rather far-fetched premise, it's actually a character-based story, and
great character work keeps the audience engaged throughout, also thanks to
a very competent cast of course. On top of that, the suspense picks up
very early in this film and then never lets off, carried throughout by
rather beautiful camerawork. So in all, a rather awesome genre ride for
sure.
