It's only two weeks until Lily (Tal Hymans), a successful young doctor,
and her psychiatrist boyfriend Kit (Alec Snow) are getting married and
will move away to London shortly thereafter, so they have booked Saint
Joseph's Guesthouse for the weekend to party with their best friends Jess
(Elke Hinrichson), Aaron (Rocco Forrester), Aaron's girlfriend Hayley
(Lani Castle), and Kit's sister Rachael (Tara Jay) - whom Lily hasn't even
met yet ... and Rachael shows complete dislike towards Lily from square
one, and it might just be it's just because Lily's a Muslim, but Rachael
insists it's something deeper. But that's not the only thing that bothers
Lily on the trip, it's also the atmosphere of the guesthouse and its
creepy history. Because you know, Saint Joseph's was a monastery in the
1800s, and during the small pox epidemic two nuns (Imogen Wilton, Willow
Alderton) have hanged a young woman (Susannah Donnellan) looking for help
and then sold it off as sacrifice, making the poor girl into a martyr. The
girl's spirit is said to never have left Saint Joseph's, and she's pretty
angry. In front of this background everything is getting out of hands
soon, and soon enough people are getting killed, and it's unclear whether
this is the doing of Rachael and Marc (Benjamin Weekes), a hitchhiker in
leaguewith her, or the wrath of something unearthly ...
Now with a premise like this, The Hanged Girl could
have easily become just another slasher, but a clever script based on
colourful characters and strong character arcs soon steers this in an
entirely different direction, moving (failed) human interaction front and
center before long and saving all murders for the finale that sure
features quite a few surprise twists. And a genre savvy directorial effort
and a strong cast carry the film rather beautifully, making this a very
enjoyable piece of genre cinema.
