Not a horror film, but a fitting tribute to Oscar Wilde, Europe's towering
giant of a man who brought The Picture Of Dorian Gray - the immortal tale of a
young man's vanity leading him into an eternal world of evil - to life. Loved at
first during his hayday, then reviled and even jailed when news of his
bisexuality came out, he is once again beloved by the modern crowd, so long
after his death. This release was turned loose on patrons of the arts in
October of 2004, marking the 150th birthday of the famous/infamous poet, writer
and swinger.
Over 150 of the man's quotes and works are recited in segments by an equal
number of celebrities from the world of art, film and literature. Estelle
Parsons, Stephanie Beacham, Lily Tomlin, Lee Grant, Joan Rivers, Martin Sheen, Bono and Ed Asner are just some of them.
Again, not a horror film, nor even a true documentary as much as a tribute,
this is not something everyone on this page will want to watch. It does offer
a fitting 110 minutes of homage to an often hated and certainly misunderstood
literary figurehead from the past.
After all, he did give us The Picture Of Dorian Gray ...
