1841, three gold miners (Tiny Lister, Dave Fennoy, Matt McHugh) go
insane while trying to exploit Hell Hole Mine, all due to a Native
American shapeshifting demon they've unwittingly set free.
In the now, young Poni (May Myat Noe), who lives with her uncle Luke
(Paul Collett) after her dad has killed himself in a fit of schizophrenia,
shows first signs of schizophrenia herself and in one instant almost kills
Luke. He's left with little choice but to put her into a sanitarium, but
since she's all the family he's got he wants to put her on experimental
treatment to cure her - but of course he lacks the money for that. Then he
rather unexpectedly receives news that his brother has left him and Poni
Hell Hole Mine, and his best friend Roscoe (Tom Sizemore) and Roscoe's
girlfriend Dawn (Tori Lane Ross) persuade him to go mining for gold -
after all, it's his best shot at getting rich quick, and that's really
what's needed for Poni's sake. So the three go on the adventure together,
and the thing's under no good star from square one, as Dawn feels quite a
bit drawn to Luke - and vice versa -, and even though nothing happens
between them, jealousy is boiling up in Luke. Also all three suffer from
bad dreams while camping next to the mine. But things really get out of
hand when the shapeshifter starts his attack, taking the forms of a sweet
little girl (Caroline Dingwall), the sexy waitress of the local bar
(Revell Carpenter), a trigger-happy sheriff (David Collett) and even of
our three heroes just to confuse them and bring them up against one
another, and soon enough it's every man and woman for themselves ...
Sally Kirkland has a cameo as Poni's doctor at the sanitarium. A
nice blend of mystery, western and ghost story that really succeeds in
keeping its audience as much in the dark as its protagonists, mixing dream
and reality and intentionally leaving one in the dark as to which is
which. And plenty of surprises, twists and turns keep the film lively
throughout, with a dynamic directorial effort and a spirited cast really
bring the story to life, making this a rather unusual but nevertheless
highly enjoyable piece of genre cinema.
