Yoon-ju (Lee Sung-jae) is driven crazy by a madly barking dog
residing somewhere in his appartment building, so when he sets his eyes
on the animal, he abducts it & first tries to kill it by his own
hand, then just locks it into a cupboard in the basement of his
appartment building & lets it starve to death. The dog belonged to a
little girl though, who the very next day brings some wanted posters to
the maintenancce office to have them stamped (so they are not torn down
by the janitors). Hyun-nam (Bae Du-ma), who works in same office, does
the stamping, &, feeling unfulfilled with her work, does get more
involved in this case of dognapping than she is supposed to. Yoon-ju
meanwhile learns that he might be promoted to professor of the
university - a job he always dreamt of & that is now vacant due to a
drunk accident of his predecessor - but only if he bribes the dean. When
he arrives at home though, he hears some more barking & learns the
dog he locked in the cupboard in the basement was not the barking
annoyance at all (it actually was unable to bark) & so wants to free
the animal again - only to end up hiding in the cupboard himself when
the building's janitor (Byun Hui-bong) comes to the basement to cook
same dog. The janitor also tells a ghost story to an acquaintance who
drops by to have some of the dog, considerably freaking out Yoon-ju who
is then locked into the basement & confronted with a weird homeless
man who resides in same basement, making Yoon-ju escape through a
window. Yoon-ju is now more determined than ever to kill the real
barking annoyance, soon fin ds it to, seperates it from its real owner
& throws it off the roof of the building - all before the eyes of
Hyun-nam, who now wants to capture him, doing something heroic to
escvape her daily routine, but when she almost has him is stropped by a
suddenly opening door. The next day, the old lady who the dog belonged
to has her wanted-posters stamped by Hyun-nam, who shows her the dog's
corpse - the lady dies from a broken heart soon afterwards. Yoon-ju, who
thinks his dog-troubles over is promptly confronted with an especially
ugly dog (yes, it's a poodle) by his pregnant bossy wife upon coming
home. She soon makes him responsible of the animal - which he promptly
loses of course. So his & Hyun-nam's pathes cross again when she has
to stamp his wanted posters & helps him hang them up, being unaware
that he actually killed the other dogs, of course. But all the efforts
she invested into caring about dogs & neglecting her other work make
her lose her job, which gives her even more time to do asomething heroic
to break out of her daily routine - which she then actually does when
she saves Yoon-ju's dog which is about to be eaten by the homeless guy
Yoon-ju was confronted with in the basement, & she captures him with
the help of a friend & has him imprisoned for dognapping. But when
the story is on the news that evening, she has been cut out of it after
all. Yoon-ju, happily reunited with his dog & being forgiven by his
wife, finally can come up with enough money to bribe the dean thanks to
his wife, but lmost has the same drunk accident as his predecessor.
Meeting Hyun-nam again one last time, both roaringly drunk, he confesses
to her that actually he was the dog-killer - but the alcohol in her
blood makes her forgive him, because actually due to being fired from
her job she finally has time to be out in the open, which she always
wanted ... Dog-haters (like myself) will probably love this
movie, a darkly funny, even at times almost absurd comedy that has many
a sad moment without ever becoming bittersweet or (even worse)
moralistic.
