Dong-woo (Park Yong-woo) gets married to lovely Su-jin (Choi Ji-Woo)
... much to the dismay of his mother (Yun So-jeong), who has lived the
past 30 years alone with his son in their big house, and now he is not
only grabbed away by another woman, but that woman moves into her home as
well.
As long as Dong-woo is present though, mother treats Su-jin with the
greatest of courtesy, it's only when he is out that she drops her polite
facade and starts terrorizing Su-jin, first only with words, but before
long, the conflict gets physical.
Dong-woo though seems to be unable to even notice the problem, up to a
point that he suspects his wife of lying - only gradually can she convince
him otherwise, and she can convince him that it is not normal for a 30
year old man to be washed by his own mother in the shower.
Mother though, seeing that she loses her grip on her son, threatens to
drown Su-jin in the bathtub - upon which Su-jin packs her things and
leaves. Not knowing the whole story, Dong-woo nevertheless realizes
everything is his mum's fault and wants to leave as well - upon which his
mother threatens to kill herself with a kitchen knife. When Dong-woo tries
to prevent her from doing so, the two get into a fight, and in the end
mother accidently stabs her son.
But mother is not one to call the proper authorities over a small thing
like a dead man, instead she lures Su-jin back into her house - where she
still keeps Dong-woo's body -, and soon enough she has knocked her out,
tied her up and now tortures her at will ...
It's only the next day that Hae-kyung, one of Su-jin's friends, notices
she is missing, and after doing a bit of investigating she finds out where
she might be.
Hae-kyung enters the house when mother is out, and to her shock she
finds her friend all tied up and bruised. When she has managed to free her
and tries to drag her up the stairs though, momma has come back, and the
three women get into a fight, at the end of which mum is left unconscious
at the floor, and the two young women get away, both slightly injured from
the fight.
But before the police arrives at her house, Momma has already taken a
knife and killed herself, right next to the corpse of her son.
And in the end, Su-jin takes the ashes of both mother and son, mixes
them together and releases them into the wind, wishing them that in their
next life they are not born as mother and son ...
Even if not terribly original, the script of that movie is quite
interesting, and the film is very well acted. That the film fails to
really work is mainly due to an uninspired direction that is great on
neither suspense nor atmosphere, and pretty much leaves script and actors
on their own. That doesn't say it's an all bad movie, it's just not the
film it could have been.
