Taking a tour through some cave system, a man (Wynn Reichert) leaves
his guided group to make some investigations of his own - something he's
ill-equipped for as eventually the light of his lantern goes out - and
then he hears something, a beast most probably, approaching him, and him
being unarmed but scared out of his mind, knows nothing better to do than
throw rocks at whatever it is to stop it in its tracks. When he's finally
found by the tour guide (Mark Greenbaum) though and the two check out the
beast that has come after our hero, they make a startling discovery ... A
film that's quite fascinating in its simplicity: Basically the film is a
man in some dimly lit locations acting according to the off-screen
narration that's lifted directly from H.P. Lovecraft's original text - and
in the process, the film proves (at least) three things: 1) Lovecraft
was a very gifted writer when it comes to creating atmosphere and quite
simply fear by mere words, 2) there's no substitute for solid acting, as
shown in this movie, and 3) Cameron McCasland is quite simply a very
clever director, in really drawing from the strengths of his script and
cast in this one and avoiding spectacle in favour of creating something
really creepy. Worth a look to be sure!
