A pair of 2000 year old priceless slippers were stolen from the local
museum's Bukistan exhibition, and since they were on loan from the
Bukistani gouvernment, this threatens to create an international crisis.
The only clue: The thief was a major from NASA, and NASA head psychiatrist
Dr Bellows (Hayden Rorke) is sure he'll be able to track down the thief in
no time thanks to his qualifications. Of course, the thief was really
from NASA, it was Major Tony Nelson (Larry Hagman), or rather his
girlfriend, the genie Jeannie (Barbara Eden), to whom the slippers
belonged 2000 years ago, and since she loved them so much back then, she
just took them back. It doesn't take Dr Bellows long to zero in on Tony,
either, but he lacks actual evidence to tie him to the case, and when he
thinks he has cornered Tony, it only backfires. Now Tony doesn't feel
happy about the whole affair, he wants to persuade Jeannie to return the
slippers, and when that doesn't quite work, trick her into giving them up.
And ultimately he steals the slippers from Jeannie and breaks into the
museom to return them, not knowing that Jeannie, who has long understood
the seriousness of the situation but never told him, is looking over his
shoulder all the time, laughing her ass off. Silly little
episode that's a perfect reminder as to why of all sitcoms from the
1960's, this is anong them most beloved: Though based on the series' basic
formula (Jeannie fails to properly adjust to modern life getting everyone
- especially Tony - into problems), it's based on an original premise,
Barbara Eden and Larry Hagman show great chemistry, the story finds the
perfect balance of witty dialogue and well-conceived slapstick, and the
audience's intelligence is never insulted. Oh, that and it's pretty funny,
too.
