Because her "master" astronaut Tony Nelson (Larry Hagman)
doesn't pay her enough attention, genie Jeannie tries to improve herself -
and to that end, she reads a magazine article about emancipation ... and
soon enough she has him pay for fancy clothes and take her out to a fancy
restaurant - where they get kicked out of of course. She then tries
herself out at a job in retail, but when she uses her magical powers a few
times too often, she's called a fraud and kicked out there as well.
Finally Tony convinces her to ... just have a pet - so she conjures up her
pet lion from her life 2000 years ago. This episode has to be
seen through the filter of time of course, since its very poor and sexist
interpretation of emancipation seems to be a slap into every woman of
today's face. That aside of course, the episode is pretty funny (while not
all that well structured) as it features some hilarious situations and
once again Barbara Eden at her mischievious best - she shows almost
cartoon-like characteristics in this one. But as I said, the whole thing
is only fun if you're able to turn of your political correctness hour for
half an hour.
