Rambu (Peter O'Brian) may be unemployed, but he's a notorious
do-gooder, always helping the needy and oppressed out of tough spots,
always fighting evil - much to the dismay of Charlie (Adang Mansyur), a
local thug who has first a drug delivery then a kidnapping spoilt by
Rambu. Charlie though is in the employ of local bad man John White (Craig
Gavin), who's quick to figure out who that Rambu even is, and then has
Rambu's wife Jenny (Yenny Farida) raped and killed by Charlie and gang. The
kidnapped girl, Ella (Lia Warokka), who Rambu kidnapped though has a
powerful father, Andre (Kaharudin Syah), who insists to take Rambu in his
employ and bring down John White for good. Rambu does his best, even if
that leads to another kidnapping of Ella, whom he frees yet again, then he
enters White's headquarters and steals incriminating documents which he
delivers to Andre. But Andre isn't the good guy he has pretended to be, as
he uses the documents to blackmail White, and once he has succeeded in
that, they start a business venture together - which Rambu only learns
when Andre has a big dinner party in White's honour ... where Rambu loses
it. Rambu now goes against both White and Andre, but loses his sidekick
(Adrian Nugraha) in one of his clashes with the gang, and is later taken
captive in another clash ... where White's girlfriend Clara (Dana
Christina) frees him though as she has had it up to hear with White ever
since she caught him trying to rape Ella - of course, Clara is allowed to
die a heroine's death for her good deed. In the finale, Rambu blows up
pretty much everything in sight, kills quite a score of baddies, and in
the end leaves White and Andre for the authorities to pick up and find
bliss in the arms of Ella. An Indonesian low budget action
effort that's anything but subtle - even if compared to comparable
Hollywood flicks from the era - and that doesn't even try to hide its
influences from the Rambo series - remember, Rambo: First
Blood Part 2 has been an international hit only the year before. All
of this of course doesn't make The Intruder a good film, and the
filmmakers have certainly not set out to make the next Citizen Kane,
just a blunt action movie - and blunt it is, and not made any better by
bad dialogue, wooden to unnecessarily hammy performances, an a bit too
skeletal films and the like ... and all of this makes The Intruder
the perfect party movie, an unintentionally funny piece of action cinema
that can be laughed at and with, that has some sweet sexpieces as well as
many silly scenes, and that greatly profits from its exotic scenery. Not
great at all ... but with the right amount of beer most certainly a great
time!
