In a way, this movie's title is so great that you almost regret this is
a documentary and not a feature film depicting just that, scream queens
invading ... but I say almost for a reason, because for all fans of 80's
and early 90's indie horror of the scream queen variety, this is an
indispensible document of that era, made during that era. Basically,
the film is of course mainly talking heads, but that's the point of this
movie, interviews with many of the most popular scream queens of their
time, with them discussing their careers, their favourite experiences,
their approach to acting, but also their views on on-screen nudity and the
like. The choice of scream queens (plus one director) to
interview is enjoyably diverse: While the film features some of the top
scream queens of its time like Michelle Bauer, Brinke Stevens and Monique
Gabrielle, plus scream director David DeCoteau, it also features some
(today) lesser known names, and women whose career peaks preceeded the
scream queen era, like Martine Beswick, who talks her Hammer
years, Janus Blythe from The Hills
Have Eyes, and Mary Woronov, who not only is full of anecdotes
about Andy Warhol, Paul Bartel, Allan Arkush and Joe Dante but is also
very open about her stint in skin flicks, plus she introduces us to her
second career as a painter. What might be almost as interesting
as all the interviews featured though is the snippets and trailers of
movies of the era that are universely so trashy and alluring at the same
time they're lots of fun. Now it will most certainly help if
you're a fan of the genre of course, but if so, this documentary is loads
of fun!
