Somewhen in the Dark Age: Back when Eneko (Unax Haden) was raised as a
farm boy, and he was best friends with forest girl Irati (Leire Lindurain)
- but since, his father has become king of the realm. But now that dad's
dying, his cousin Belasko (Kepa Errasti) demands the throne, and he wins
over the crowd by "blaming" the peace with the non-Christian
Saracenes on Eneko (as an adult played by Eneko Sagardoy). Then Eneko's
father's corpse disappears and that seems to confirm everything that
Belasko was saying all along, and he's made king. Eneko couldn't care less
who's king though, but he wants his father's body back, and just happens
to know it was taken by Irati's (now played by Edurne Azkarte) mum Mari
(Itziar Ituno), a mythological creature and goddess of her own realm.
Eneko wants to retrieve the body - but Belasko has heard that Mari also
has in her possession the vast treasure of the Franks, and obviously wants
that, so sends some of his mercenaries after Eneko. Thing is, Mari has
quite some monsters at her disposal to keep away, people, friend or foe
... Now here's a film that looks nothing short of impressive:
Beautiful costumes in front of impressive landscapes, scary monsters and
not too much reliance on CGI, all captured by marvelous camerawork while
the direction puts an emphasis on atmosphere. So this is really a great
movie when it comes to looks alone. Unfortunately, Irati doesn't
manage to convince quite as well on the story side of things: Basically,
the plot's just routine fantasy, with its characters never go beyond mere
clichée, and in all the thing just takes itself too seriously and lacks
playfulness. So basically, this is something for the eye - but lacks depth
at the same time.
