Carole (Sandra Julien) is pretty much frigid, caused in all probably by
her having witnessed her parents' (Richard Saint-Bris, France-Noelle)
loveless marriage for too long. So she even doesn't let her boyfriend Eric
(Alain Hitier) get to first base. But then she sees a stranger, falls in
love at first sight, falls down an elevator shaft, hits her head ... and
emerges with an insatiable libido, causing her to believe she's a
nymphomaniac. Eric really can't keep up with her, so she has to find other
lovers - and when she's found naked with her boss in his office, it's a
scandal that shocks the whole village she lives in, and causes her to move
to Paris, where she soon finds work at a furniture shop ... but really her
boss Muriel (Janine Reynaud) wants her more as her lover, a lover she
freely shares with top customer Hugo (Michel Lemoine). Now Carole knows
(or thinks to know) what she's doing is wrong, but she can't resist the
temptation, and what's more, she becomes more and more insatiable and
sometimes has sex with total strangers. She confesses to a priest (Yves
Vincent), who is very understanding, but can't really help her ... so
eventually, Carole tries to kill herself - but is saved by a doctor,
Michel (Patrick Verde), whom she instantly falls in love with, and who
also has feelings for her, so when she's dismissed from the hospital, he
takes her under his wing to "cure" her condition - and she's
doing better every day ... but then Carole is invited to an orgy at
Muriel's place, and to her surprise, Michel insists that she goes. But
will she be able to resist her urges in such an enviroment? I
am a Nymphomaniac is of course as senationalistic a title as can be,
made to attract the raincoat crowd - but the film, while it might fall
short of today's standards of political correctness, is by fare not the
lurid entertainment its monicker might suggest, instead a well
put-together piece of erotica that puts much more emphasis on story than
sex, and the sex scenes are actually pretty sensual with a focus on mood
and feel, rather than the expected show-it-all. Now of course, taking the
plot by its own merits, it is an excuse to get Sandra Julien out of
her clothes and into sexual situations time and again and its attempts at
psychology are rather naive in approach, but more than anything else the
film's directorial effort that puts an emphasis on atmosphere (even in the
non-sex scenes) and shows genuine inventiveness makes this a very ok watch
nevertheless. Especially fans of vintage erotica will love this one!
