Seemingly by chance, a wandering samurai (Michael D. Bird) finds abode
in the hut of an old man (Jeff Swisher) during a thunderstorm - and in
consequence inquires about the legend of the neighbouring forest that's
allegedly haunted by another samurai who committed seppuku (= suicide by
disembowelment) but was ultimately let down by his "kaishakunin"
(= suicide assistant who had to take care that the process didn't result
in too much pain), and thus can never rest in peace. But it turns out this
is more than just an old legend ... It's very obvious that
Jerry Janda, writer and director of this movie, loves Japanese samurai
cinema of yesteryear very much, and knows his way around the genre, both
in terms of audio and visuals. And he's also well-versed in spinning
spooky yarns, especially when it comes to creating atmosphere. Thus the
outcome is a very powerful and tense creepy tale, that might not be
without predecessors, but it gets its plot across really well.
