One day, Abby (Manon Pages) brings a kite she has inherited over to her
brother Brandon (Charlie Early) - and the next day, he's found dead, and
the kite's gone. A mysterious man who calls himself Oracle (Zack Lee)
shows up at Abby's place and warns her to not do any investigations on the
kite's involvement in her brother's death - but of course, she and
co-worker Daniel (Carter Simoneaux), who (not so) secretly has the hots
for her, break into her brother's house and find out he has done all kinds
of investigations on grandma's kite, which apparently is a Nazi
superweapon. They visit a bread festival to capture the kite, because
apparently kites love bread, but the kite has brought more of its kite and
the bread fest turns into a massacre, with Abby and Daniel barely making
it out alive. So they gather their friends (Austin Naulty, Josh
"Iceburg" Schmitt, Austin Frosch, Sean Phelan) and form a
kitebuster team, training themselves in combat before taking the fight to
the kites - but the kite massacre everyone but Abby and Daniel. Enter
Oracle yet again, who tells them they got it all wrong, as these are not
Nazi but communist kites - but how does that knowledge help in taking them
down?
The very in-your-face title already suggests it, this is not a 100%
serious film. In fact, from premise to approach, to brand of humour, to
even the movie's not-all-that-special effects, Killer Kites is very
much reminiscent of Attack
of the Killer Tomatoes, a little piece of monster movie nonsense
built around a very unlikely killer creature that's very much aware of its
silliness and milks it to the fullest extent. This of course doesn't
result in a high brow comedy - but in a next to perfect party movie that's
best watched with a few friends and a few beers.
