Most of the population of Dongnae, the village just across the river
from Seobi's (Bae Doona) clinic for the poor, is pretty much
massacred/turned by the zombies, something that wasn't at all prevented by
the local garrison which decided to close the fort to the locals seeking
asylum to keep the soldiers safe - but with daybreak all the zombies run
for cover as they only operate at night. During the day, Crown Prince
Chang (Ju Ji-Hoon) assumes command, as while he might be officially
dethroned and stripped of rank, but the news hasn't reached Dongnae yet.
He orders all the bodies found in the city to be burned or beheaded, then
he and his loyal bodyguard Mu-yeong (Kim Sang-ho) return to the royal
palace, as Chang has by now found out that the Emperor is in all
probability dead but has been revived as a zombie - and he needs to stay
that way until the Queen, Chang's stepmother, bears him a son to succeed
him, a plan carefully put into action by Chancellor Cho (Ryu Seung-ryong),
who just happens to be the Queen's dad. Thing is, once Chang's gone, the
commander of the garrison assumes command and rather than try to rid the
town of zombies, he gathers his soldiers and all aristocrats and leaves
town by the only boat not destroyed by the other day's disaster ... After
two episodes of build-up, Kingdom really hits it home in
this one with a big zombie massacre - that might not be as explicit as
many a gorehound may have hoped, but at the same time it's very
well-staged and edited, and makes perfect use of its running zombies.
Plus, this episode really succeeds in twisting the series already twisted
and multi-layered plot even further. Good zombie fun, really.
