Years ago, young Sawa came home to find her parents murdered. But
investigating cop Akai and his friend Kanie promise to take her in, take
care of her, and do everything in their power to find her parents' killer.
But them taking care of hercomes at a price, they make her their sexslave,
and train her to be a professional killer. They tell her she only kills
people the police cannot touch ... but that's very doubtful at best. Once
during a hit, she is assisted by Oburi, another orphan Akai and Kanie have
picked up somewhere, and the two of them take an instant liking into one
another. Then though, Oburi wants out, and Akai even promises to let him
go if he fulfills three more assignments - but even the first of these
assignments is supposed to lure him into a death trap ... Oburi survives
though. Now Sawa is told to assassinate Oburi, but she just can't, instead
they fall in love with each other - much to the dismay of Akai and Kanie
of course, who take them captives, then Akai rapes Sawa before Oburi's
very eyes before Oburi is dragged off by Kanie. Sawa then makes an escape
... The next day, Akai is called to the scene of a crime where Kanie was
to murder Oburi, but instead he finds the killed man to be Kanie. Now he
knows he's in deep shit, because he knows he must face Oburi in a
showdown. But instead of Oburi, Sawa shows up, who has long found out that
it was him and Kanie who have actually killed her parents, and now she
wants (and ultimately gets) her revenge. Kite is a film
that's supposed to provoke, all the violence is super-gory and excessive,
and all the sex is of the hardcore variety. This of course cannot hide the
fact that the story isn't all that original, it's just another variation
on the professional hitwoman-theme, and plotwise there have been way more
interesting professional hitwoman-stories. But that can't hide the fact
that Kite is extremely well-made, all the action scenes are wonderfully
orchestrated, perfectly paced and full of inventive twists and details,
and accompanied by a very fitting free jazz score that it's just a sensual
feast. So for the action alone, this film is a must-see, and plotwise,
while not being exactly original, it'S at least not bad either.
