When one day a husband comes home from his mistress to his wife, he has already hired a killer for
her. But instead of the wife the killer dies ... Further attempts on her
life also add up to naught, until, halfway through the movie, the wife
has also hired a killer to protect her &, if necessary, kill her
husband. In an ensuing struggle this killer dies, too. & when the
loving couple are finally at each other's throats up close &
personally, real life popsinger couple Sonali & Roop Kumar Rathod
come by to sing a song (it actually makes some sense in the film's
context) & our couple briefly rediscovers the romance of their
marriage thought lost (she even puts on her wedding gown), but they
finally decide they have to kill each other. A final struggle
ensues, during which he strangles her, but after that realizes she has
already as good as killed him by poisoning his liquor. With only a few
moments to live, he has a (lengthy) monologue in which he explains he
always was insane & the like, showing remorse & dying with her
corpse in his arms ...
This last monologue is actually exactly what to some extent
ruins this otherwise unflawed movie. Before it, Koi Hai seemed
like a very black comedy - though not played for the laughs, which makes
it all the funnier in a dark sort of way - about an estranged
coupleseeing no other way but death to go for their relationship. The
ending though does give the previous proceedings a whole other &
somewhat bland meaning, steering away from clever wicked comedy- into
overused thriller-territory, which seems very much out of touch with the
actual narration. |
