Years ago, Pang (Billy Chong) saw to it that Hudai was thrown into the
slammer ... but now Hudai is out again, and he wants revenge - and to make
his revenge particularly gruesome and worthwhile, he has acquired the help
of a Taoist priest to raise the dead for him. Thing is, the whole thing
goes horribly wrong, and instead of killing Pang in the most gruesome
manner, Hudai dies himself, thanks to the zombies the priest has created
for him. Thing is, Hudai is now a spirit that can only be seen by the
Taoist priest, and he forces the priest to find him a new body ...
Change of scenery: Pang's father is training Pang in kung fu to total
exhaustion, mainly because of an age old feud between his family and the
Long family, and the Longs are way too good in kung fu for pops - so his
son has to fight it out. Ultimately, Pang fights and kills the last of the
Longs', which is good because a family feud is over but not so good,
because when celebrating his son's victory, Pang's dad dies too ...
Hudai and the priest are still looking for adead body, but when the
priest tries to use Long's body as a host for Hudai, he accidently raises
Long as Long, and ultimately puts Hudai's soul into Pang's dad's body -
then he tries to make a disappearing act ... but when Pang realizes he has
to fight two enemies, he soon finds the priest again and forces him to
help him to return Hudai to his own dead body and let both him and his
dead father die for real, while he also gets help from a Buddhist mong to
fight the reanimated Long ... and of course, Pang is victorious in the end
...
Especially when compared to Sammo Hung's Encounters
of the Spooky Kind, a very similar but superior martial arts
horror comedy produced a year earlier, one can't but notice what a crude
film Kung Fu Zombie is: the humour is invariably unsubtle, if not
to say broad, the kung fu is not all that special, and the whole thing has
a certain cheapish look to it ... but taken by its own terms, Kung Fu
Zombie is also much fun, much of the comedy has a so-bad-it's-good
feel to it, ther very basic special effects give the film a trashy
atmosphere, and the story is just loveable exploitation, maybe even taken
a step further than in other similar movies. Of course, it's not as good
as Encounters of the
Spooky Kind, but as a piece of trash in the kung fu horror comedy
mold, it's still priceless ...
