A quartet of teenagers - Rebeca (Erika Buenfil), Manolo (Ernesto
Laguardia), Diana (María Rebeca) and Armando (Germán Bernal) - have made
it their speciality to rob graves for all they're good for, helped by
Rebeca's ESP powers that allow her to feel out the right graves. And when
they, thanks to Rebeca, find a big crypt under one of the graves
containing - besides corpses, naturally, every kind of trinkets and
jewellery, they think they're in luck ... the fools. Since we are in a
horror film this crypt quite naturally houses the corpse of a man who was
possessed by the devil that only waits for the axe in his chest to be
removed so he can go on another killing spree - and of course our
youngsters do just that.
Soon enough, the corpse comes back to life and starts killing people,
first two peasents whom our youngsters find, while in turn the local
Sheriff (Fernando Almada) finds them finding the dead peasents, thinks he
has caught them red-handed and throws them into the slammer. Only when
more corpses are found that have been killed after the kids were already
arrested comes the Sheriff to the conclusion the killer must be someone
else - but still he holds the kids for graverobbing - but suddenly, the
Sheriff has more pressing matters to attend to since hid daughter Olivia
(Edna Bolkan) and her friends is camping out very near to where the
murders have happened ... an when he comes to save her, her friends have
all been murdered already.
In the meantime, two friends (Andrés Bonfiglio, Andrea Lagarreta) come
to our quartet of graverobber's rescue, but in the meantime, the killer -
who of course also has supernatural powers (hey, he's in league with the
devil) - has also come there and starts killing left and right ...
Eventually, the Sheriff has the idea that the secret of the killer's
supernatural powers must lie somewhere in the crypt, and eventually he
finds a book on black magic down there, which he asks the local priest
(Roberto Canedo) to read ... and eventually, a way to kill the killer is
found that consists of a combination of dynamite, praying and the axe that
stuck in his chest when he was found ... and the Sheriff, his daughter,
Rebeca and Manolo all come out of the ordeal alive ...
Of course, this film - basically a formulaic stalk'n'slash movie - is
pretty much exactly as trashy as my synopsis makes it to be ... but it has
a rougher, cruder quality to it that many slicker and higher budgeted
US-productions sadly lack. This doesn't make Grave Robbers a good
film essentially, it merely makes it a trifle more enjoyable for the
horror and gore crowd than much similar fare ...
