When Michael Lanyard (Louis Hayward) arrives at his Beverly Hills hotel
for a vacation, he learns his wife Bonnie (Rosemarie Stack) is already
waiting for him. Problem is of course that Lanyard is not married, and he
has never met Bonnie in his life, though she acts so convincingly, that he
simply decides to play along and take his wife out for a night on the
town, basically to find out which of his friends has set him up - but all
he does find out is that one of his friends, Caradoc (Roy Roberts), has
become his enemy for reasons unknown. Later that evening, Bonnie drugs Lanyard, then takes off. When
Lanyard wakes up the next day, he decides to
try and figure out what has been going on, and he starts with Caradoc, who
tells him Bonnie has blackmailed him in Lanyard's name. From here on, it's
surprisingly easy for Lanyard to track down Bonnie and her partner in crime
(Rex King) and overcome them with Caradoc's help. The pure
mystery aspects of this episode are ok, but the basic premise - someone
pretending to be a guy's wife and the guy almost falling for it - is just
too far fetched to ever be remotely believable. Still, there are plenty of
worse crime dramas out there.
