When Kim Eun-ju (Jun Ji-hyun) moves out of her house by the sea (called Il
Mare), she leaves a letter for the next tenant to send her mail after her. When
Han Sung-hyun (Lee Jung-jae) moves into the house, he finds the letter ...
thing is, he is the first ever tenant of Il Mare - the house was completed just
days before he moved in, plus the letter is dated from 2000, while he is still
back in 1998.
Soon the 2 of them realize the mailbox of Il Mare is in the center of some
time vortex & they can communicate back & forth 2 years over it. Soon,
a friendship starts, as both are kind of lonely, Sung-hyun has just terminated
a relatinship & Eun-ju's fiancé Ji-hoon has just left for America to
study. & the 2 penpals from different times soon become platonic lovers,
& Eun-ju even arranges for Sung-hyun to meet her in her own past.
But then they arrange for a date in both his & her future, but at the
arranged place, Sung-hyun never shows up ... instead Eun-ju just finds a house
that is being built (Sung-hyun, it needs to be mentioned here, is in fact a
construction worker with aspirations to become an architect).
Eun-ju, now totally disillusioned by love, friendship, whatever, asks
Sung-hyun for one last favour, he should, in her past, see to it that she &
her fiancé do not break up ... instead though, Ji -hoon, at their next
meeting, tells her he has found a new girl in America & it's over ...
Heartbroken, she starts to investigate at the university what happened to
Sung-hyun & why he did neither meet nor help her ... & finds out that
he had a fatal car accident just when he was going to Eun-ju's & Ji-hoon's
meeting place to save their relationship. & what's more, the accident
happened before her very eyes.
But, as a legacy, he had the house built on the place where the 2 of them
were supposed to meet.
Eun-ju writes a final letter to Sung-hyun, asking him not to come & try
to save her relationship (thus not have an accident) ... & it works, time
has reversed its course.
& finally, Sung-hyun goes to Eun-ju to meet her in person, will love
blossom ... ?
A rather banal love story that is kept remotely interesting thanks to its
fantastic elements (even though, as usual with time travel stories, logic is
thrown out the window eventually). A competent cast & the avoidance of too cheesy
clichés make this one watchable though.
In 2006 - when Hollywood has apparently run dry of ideas, this was remade as The
Lake House by Alejandro Agresti, starring Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves.
