Cissy (Carol Kane) has been raised in the wild by her explorer father,
but has come to live with her sister Ellen (Lee Grant) after their
father's death. But she's still unadapted to a civilized lifestyle and has
turned Ellen's house into something more like her father's camp - complete
with a cage she tends to keep an ape (or in her words, mafu) in to study
and draw. Problem is, she can't always control her temper and eventually
kills her mafu, only for her uncle Zom (Will Geer) to provide her with a
new one. But after Ellen has witnessed her brutally beating to death her
last mafu, an orangutan, she decides no more apes for Cissy, to which Zom
agrees whole-heartedly. Ellen has to leave for a few days for work, and
Cissy assures her she'll be fine. In Ellen's absence, her colleague David
(James Olson) stops by the house, someone Ellen has long had feelings for
(and vice versa), much to the dismay of Cissy. So Cissy lures him into her
mafu cage, chains him up, and humiliates and draws him, before beating him
to death and burying him in the garden. When Ellen returns, she only
gradually finds traces that David has even been here - but she's in shock
when she sees Cissy's latest mafu drawing - of David - and starts putting
two and two together - but too late it seems, as Cissy has already put it
on her mind to make Ellen her next mafu ... The Mafu Cage
sure is a film that's in a league of its own, a piece of psycho horror
that's not so disturbing due to its basic story but its bizarre imagery,
an imagery that really mirrors its man character Cissy's mindset and her
descent into more and more madness. But of course, a cleverly written
script helps with this as well, as does a solid small ensemble cast. It
surely is a movie that will stay with one for a while.
