There is something dead wrong in this Christian fundamentalist backwood
Canadian village where you can buy "witches" at the local gas
station to torture and burn them at your own convenience. Yet everybody
seems to do it, and no one seems to care ... no one but a young man (Eric
Repke), who's properly freaked out when his sister (Rebecca MacKinnon) and
aunt (Erin Stuart) choose their witch for the day (Maxwell Lantz), to burn
him later to a nice plate of homemade cookies. Our hero refuses to torture
the poor victim (whom he doesn't even believe to be a witch), and when the
aunt goes at it too violently in his stead, he hits her over the head and
helps the witch to excape. Too bad though he hasn't taken care of his
sister as well, as she's pretty good with the gun ... Malleus
Maleficarum is a rather interesting little short, as it does not relie
too heavily on genre conventions but instead tells a rather original genre
story with all the violence in the right places, plenty of suspense - but
also a good deal of humour, where you'd least expect it, and it works,
too. Add to this a good ensemble cast who manage to competently carry the
story despite the total lack of dialogue or narration, and a directorial
effort that finds the right balance between irony and shock, and you've
got yourself an extremely nice piece of genre cinema.
