When police officer Nyman (Harald Hamrell) is killed in his hostpial
bed, four police officers start investigating, veteran inspector Beck
(Carl-Gustaf Lindstedt), burned-out and way too tired Rönn (Hakan
Serner), the break every rule hotshot Larsson (Thomas Hellberg) and
Krollberg (Sven Wollter), the intellectual investigator who never carries
a gun.
At first their investigations lead to very little, until they
investigate Nyman's past and realizes that he was more of a bad cop who
was known for mistreating suspects and the like ... and eventually, Beck
and Rönn stumble upon a case from 10 years ago, when a woman he had
arrested died from diabetes, simply because he thought she was on drugs,
nothing more. Thing is, this woman was the wife of a police officer,
Eriksson (Ingvar Hirdwall) serving under Nyman, who has grown weird ever
since that incident. Beck and Rönn dig a little more and find out
Eriksson's daughter had just been taken away from him and he has troubles
paying his rent and everything. And in his appartment, they even find a
list of cops he plans to die, Beck among them ...
But by now it's almost too late because Eriksson has climbed a roof in
the city carrying quite some artillery and now picks out policemen to
shoot them dead. And sicne he's such a good marksman and has meticulously
planned his operation he can even fend off the SWAP teams the police tries
to send in and make a helicopter crash in the middle of town.
Eventually, Beck tries his luck, but is shot down and only just saved
by Krollberg, but in the end, Larsson and a small team manage to enter the
roof from three directions at a time, surprise and surround and ultimately
shoot him ...
Very nice Swedish crime drama that gradually (and logically) moves from
murder mystery focussed on meticulous police work - which beautifully sets
up the characters within the story context - to suspenseful action film
without betraying its story. A very tight direction and great acting by
all of the involved make this one a worthwhile alternative to the
generally overrated US-action cinema of its time.
