The Treasures, a girl group to promote Christian ideals via song, is
only a small wheel in the Christian (fundraising) organisation of the
Pastor, as is his militia, the Vigilantes, who see to it that the word of
the Lord, or what they perceive it to be, is followed in the streets - by
force if need be. But the Treasures don't only thing, at night they turn
into masked vigilants themselves, track down and visiously attack
promiscuous women until they either promise to mend their way - or lose
consciousness. At one such attack though, Mari (Mari Oliveira) is scarred
in her face, and soon enough loses her job at a beauty clinic because of
it. And also the other Treatures put pressure on her to hide her
imperfection the best she can to still be able to pose as the ideal
Christian woman - especially group leader Michele, who also runs a YouTube
channel where she does Christian makeup tutorials. Feeling somewhat of an
outcast among her peers, Mari decides to take a job as nurse at a clinic
for coma patients in hopes of finding fabled Melissa, a once famous
actress who has been scarred for life for being promiscuous and whose fate
inspired the Treasures' nightly activities. At the clinic though, Melissa
has her sexual awakening with a male nurse - much to the dismay of
Michele, but she has a deep secret of her own, since she's in a
relationship with a Vigilante - as was expected of her - who frequently
beats her black and blue. So Mari and Michele soon start questioning their
identity as Treasures, and the Pastor's righteousness even, but for now
they're caught in their lives, and it's only a question of time until
their frustration (and the frustration of many other sexually repressed
women) will boil over ... An extremely interesting film that
mixes satire on religious fanatism, social commentary, and drama about
sexual awakening with horror motives, a fair share of comedy and even some
musical numbers - and the whole thing works thanks to a self-assured
direction shat seems to shiftlessly switch between genres, and a very
tight screenplay that manages to surprise and shock throughout but never
loses its light-footed approach. And the cast is very solid indeed, to
make this well worth watching.
