Joe (Joe Ciminera) is a comparatively young don of a mafia family who
tries to bring the business of the New York mafia as a whole into the 21st
century as the heroin trade, once the cornerstone of the organisation's
income, is now doing more harm than good, with more and more attention of
law inforcement drawn to it as schoolkids as young as 12 start taking it.
Instead, Joe puts his bets on electronics. Many of the other bosses don't
like this, and as it's usual with too many differing opinions among the
mafia, soon things turn ugly, and someone has put a hit out on Joe. Joe
survives though, also thanks to his bodyguards, who lose their lives
defending him. But Joe is smart, and while he should long have rushed to a
hospital, he orders a hit on a social club of the rival family he suspects
behind the attempt on his life, to be conducted by some outsiders, and
once back on his feet manages to take over the reigns in the affair from
top capo Carmine (Thomas Bencivenga), crowds quite some of the local
families behind himself, trusting on the age-old concept of family honour
coupled with his predilection for electronics (which started the war),
even gets his unruly sister (Tiffany Browne-Tavarez) to work in his
interest, and once his adversaries least expect it, Joe is ready to strike
... Me Familia is pretty much a mafia epic as cool as
they come: It's populated by colourful characters that go beyond just
caricatures, is graced by some elegant camerawork, and even if the plot's
a tad convoluted (as mafia epics often tend to be) it's also very tense,
well-structured and sprinkled with quite a few surprises and unexpected
twists. And the finale sure packs a punch! Again, quite a cool movie.
