Nita (Sarah Padden) runs a speakeasy, but otherwise she couldn't be a
nicer person, especially to Bert (John Darrow), a lovesick young man whose
girlfriend Jean (Claudia Dell) likes to play around with another man,
Byron Crosby (Theodore von Eltz), a man of the world, artist and lothario
... and she does it for no other reason than to tease Bert.
Nita though wants to get Jean together with Bert for good ... but why
you may ask ?
In secret, Nita is Jean's mother, who has left Nita and family 15 years
ago because she couldn't put up with her mother in law (Lucy Beaumont)
anymore and has since become a woman of ill repute but with a big heart,
while her family has told Jean her mother is dead.
Byron meanwhile also has a very jealous girlfriend, Mona (Lina
Basquette), who doesn't like him running around with other women,
especially not with Jean, and when one day Mona catches Byron with Jean in
his flat he - unnoticed by Jean - lures him into his bedroom and shoots
him.
Jean, finding only his dead body not her, runs off in terror, but on
the way out stumbles over Nita, who had just come to (physically) drag her
away from Byron. But when she finds the dead man, she concludes Jean, her
own daughter, must be the killer, and tries to remove evidence ... but is
caught red-handed, and as a result, she is arrested, tried and - since she
doesn't want to give away Jean - convicted for murder.
It's only then that Jean cracks. She not only tells the truth to Bert,
who was Nita's lawyer in court, but also produces evidence that is not
enough to free Nita, but it could put Mona in a spot ... So Bert, Jean and
the police set Mona a trap, and she walks right into it, and in the end
confesses the murder.
Nita throws a big celebration in her speakeasy once she is out again,
and it seems Bert has found out that she is Jean's mother ... however she
prefers to leave things as they were.
For a cheap early talkie crime-/courtroom-drama this is not too bad a
film, thanks to some characters out of the cliché (the barowner with a
heart of gold, the good girl who likes to play ariound a little too
much). On the other hand, the film is nothing to get wild about either.
