Someone is robbing the blood banks of the city. Nobody knows why, but
the local chief of police (Willard E.Pugh) is desperate enough to turn to
masked championship wrestler, crimefighter, master scientist and gifted
musician Mil Máscaras for assistance - who figures out where and when the
bloodbank robbers will strike next in no time, and he promises to support
the police in their stakeout. However, because he had to be in a tagteam
wrestling match with El Hijo del Santo, Mil Máscaras arrives late for the
stakeout, and by now the baddies are already at work emptying the bank.
When Mil Máscaras tries to intervene he's overcome and tied up, but
manages to free himself and capture one of the baddies - but the other
baddies are gone with the loot. Mil Máscaras interrogates his captive
and learns about an Aztec mummy (Jeffrey Uhlmann) that has come back to
life and now wants to take over the earth. Along with his friends the
chief of police and the professor (Kurt Drennen Mirtsching), Mil Máscaras
pays a visit to the mummy to learn it bears a grudge against him,
personally, a champion of justice like the present day Mil
Máscaras, because one of his ancestors killed it hundreds of years ago.
The mummy tries to hypnotize Mil Máscaras, but his mask blocks out all
hypnotic rays. From now on, the mummy tries every trick in the book to
get rid of Mil Máscaras, be it a zombie wrestler in the ring (Magister),
magic mushrooms in his food or two sexy vampire models (Jenna &
Jessica Brendel) during a promotional photoshoot, but nothing seems to
work, Mil Máscaras remains the champion of every situation. But he also
has one weakness, that's Maria (Melissa Osborn), who's in love with him
and who he has strong feelings for. So the mummy kidnaps her to lure Mil
Máscaras into a trap ... and it works, soon it has Mil Máscaras all tied
up and prepares to kill him while making Maria his bride. But Mil
Máscaras did not come without backup, specifically the professor's robot
(also Jeffrey Uhlmann) who takes apart the mummy's temple before
malfunctioning. Now, the mummy prepares to unleash an army of the undead
onto the world, when out of nowhere appear a handful of masked wrestlers (Blue Demon
jr, Huracan Ramirez jr, Neutron, Dos Caras, Argozan, La Torcha, Maura
Incognita, El Medico Angel, El Carde, Trench Fighter) to give the undeads
a good clobbering. It's left to Mil Máscaras though to beat the Aztec
Mummy to a pulp, then he and his friends blow up his temple - and the
earth is saved. Richard Lynch plays the American president, P.J. Soles
the celebrity commentator at one of Mil Máscaras' matches. Mil
Máscaras' first movie appearance in way over a decade, and a good four
decades after his debut feature, is ... surprisingly consistent in style
to his movies of old. Basically, the film is of course an hommage to his
films of old, but one that's surprisingly free of moronic humour (despite
the obviously silly plot), or misguided postmodern reinterpretations of
beloved genres of old. Instead it tells your typical old school lucha
libre tale with fantastic plot elements on one hand, gaping plotholes and
unreasonable exaggerations on the other, with mostly old fashioned
practical special effects and retro designs. All of this makes the film
work within its confines, because it doesn't try to be more clever than
the genre it's an hommage to, instead shows genuine love to the lucha
libre films from 30 to 40 years ago. So if you are a fan of those movies,
it's safe to say you will at least like this one as well. However, somehow
the exercise to just recreate a movie genre of old without adding anything
also seems a bit futile ...
