End time films have been the thing for the past decade or so.
Christians watch the things for inspiration, atheists watch them for
laughs and someone like me who is not a born-againer watches them
because from time to time, you see a good horror film within. The Moment
After has its moments, though it is of course more designed toward being
uplifting for the faithful.
Like similar films, this movie starts with The Rapture, where Jesus
snatches all of his flock up to be with him and those left behind are
destined to encoutner the coming of The Antichrist. The odd part is, The
Antichrist is never named and is not shown in this movie, but one sees
the start of his handiwork: World domination, stripping of individual
rights, tracking and spying. You know, George W.Bush might make a good
Antichrist himself, so if people suddenly vanish in the blinking of an
eye, you're gonna see me turn to Jesus right quick. In the event this
does not happen, everyone stays put, Bush lasts his term and slides
mercifully into the history books as the worst President in America's
history and life goes on, I will continue to watch movies of this sort
without much more thought toward Christ's return..
While The Moment After did not win me over to Jesus as it was presumedly
intended to do, it did keep my interest. A good musical score helped,
decent direction and some impressive acting by some of those invovled.
Essentially, two FBI agents investigate the great vanishing. The light
comes on for one of them, while the other stays bad. Of course this one
finds Jesus and the other does not.
In the midst, we have the making of a decent horror film and possible
followup films where the Antichrist does make himself known in
full-blown horror.
An interesting and frightening concept shows people in a panic, moving
away from common sense due to the trauma of the events around them and
rushing to accept whatever their government tells them. The FBI agents
see their own powers being taken away as the USA moves in line with a
brave new world, headed by the wicked Antichrist in Europe, insists
people take the dreaded mark of the beast in the form of a tracking chip
and a military dictatorship starts to take over where democracy once
was. Enter a converted Jew who is now leading people to Jesus, but is
charged by the government with starting an opposing military group and
you can see where this is going a mile away. Good FBI guy finds the
misisonary and the truth. Bad FBI agent does not and decides to be a
company man for the coming Antirchrist all the way.
These end of days films always make for interesting viewing, though most
of them follow the same pattern. Different antagonists, protagonists and
settings, but the same theme: Rapture comes, Christians leave, those
left behind try to figure what's what, Antichrist shows up, some follow
him, some reject him and everyone stands around waiting for Jesus to
come back. While waiting, the body count starts to rise.
Still not that bad of a film. The whole thing as seen through the view
of two FBI agents is a nice change in pace.
