Eddie Munster (Butch Patrick) wants to bring family bat Igor to schoo
for their pet fair, but unbeknowst to him, Igor throws a temper tantrum
and flies of, so Grandpa (Al Lewis) turns himself into a bat to help out.
The bat's certainly freaking the teachers out but is a hit with the other
students, so Eddie, still believing it's Igor and not Grandpa, exchanges
him for a sqirell - and when he finds out he has actually given away
Grandpa, he learns that the boy whom he has exchanged bats with has
actually sold Grandpa to his father, NASA scientist Brubaker (Gilbert
Green), so the Munsters are all off to Washington where Brubaker works in
a lab to get Grandpa back - and Herman (Fred Gwynne) has no problems get
into the NASA facility as the guards mistake him for an alien, but then
takes with him the wrong bat, and it's only through dumb luck that Grandpa
ultimately manages to escape on his own. There's probably not
one truly bad episode of the classic Munsters due to the
great lead cast and the great chemistry Fred Gwynne, Al Lewis and Yvonne
De Carlo had with one another, and the makers also usually had a good hand
at choosing the right supporting cast - but that said, some episodes
suffer a bit from lazy writing that relies too much on just the quality of
the leads. This one fortunately is not such an episodes as it repeatedly
gets its lead characters into new situations they can make their own, be
it their airplane flight with the nervous stewardess (Sally Mills) or all
the NASA antics (and Gilbert Green makes a good supporting player here),
making this a pretty good episode in basically a pretty good series.
