Cop Nick (Adam Sandler) has promised his wife Audrey (Jennifer Aniston)
to take her to Europe at their wedding, but it's only at their 15th
wedding anniversary that he actually makes true his promise, and then only
to make up for some of his shortcomings. On the flight to Europe, Audrey
meets charming Charles Cavendish (Luke Evans), who takes a liking in her
and invites her and Nick to travel with him on his uncle Malcolm Quince's
(Terence Stamp) yacht, where said uncle is having a wedding, of all people
to Cavendish's ex-fiancee Suzi (Shioli Kutsuna). Nick is of course eaten
up by jealousy, seeing Audrey and Cavendish getting on so splendidly, yet
when he sees the bus they are to travel Europe in, he decides to accept
the invitation despite everything. On the yacht, Malcolm announces he
plans to disinherit everyone from his family (who are all gathered here of
course), and leave everything to Suzi in case of his death, but then the
lights go out, and once they go on again, Malcolm's found dead, murdered.
Nick, being a policeman - though not a detective as he leads his wife on
to believe - takes care of the situation ... but not really well enough,
as once they arrive in Monte Carlo, Inspector de la Croix (Dany Boon)
tells him that he believes Nick and Audrey are the guilty party. He hasn't
got enough evidence for an arrest but confiscates their passports. Now
it's up to Nick and Aubrey to prove their innocence, while all Monte Carlo
is brimming with excitement as it's Grand Prix weekend, and whatever our
heroes do, it seems they're only creating more chaos, and slowly suspect
after suspect falls dead, and eventually, attempts are even made at Nick
and Audrey's lives - but despite suspects dying by the dozen pretty much,
the case gets only more and more complex, and the closer our heroes get to
the truth, the more suspicions are heaped on them in the eyes of the
police ... Murder Mystery is a rather weak attempt at
making a comedic murder mystery, basically because the actual murder
mystery isn't really well constructed, with the culprits really pulled out
of a hat in the end rather than logically explained, and then the story is
filled with old world clichés that are by 2019 long outdated already. It
also of course doesn't help that Adam Sandler's character (as in, the
protagonist) isn't really relatable, and he and Jennifer Aniston fail to
have the kind of chemistry to really pull of a story like this. On top of
that, the whole thing isn't really funny. All that said, one has to admit,
the film looks really good, and makes great use of its locations. But
that's not nearly enough to save the movie.
