It's New Year's Eve ... well, not really, it's just a TV station taping
a New Year's Eve show, and doing so for more than a week now as
everything's supposed to be perfect - to the point where there's no real
audience in the room, just background actors being supposed to react on
command . But things do go wrong almost constantly, like an extra being
killed by a camera crane, and having to be replaced on the quick as there
can't be any empty seats in the auditorium. Meanwhile superstar Alphonso
(Raphael) worries about his act being the top of the show while his
neglected son (Carlos Areces) has already hired a hitman to kill him
"live" on the show. But there's also rising star Adanne (Mario
Casas) worrying about his sperm being stolen, the presenters wanting to
make the jump to a reality TV show, and so on and so forth while outside
the studios there's a riot going on that might make the whole show
obsolete anyways - so obviously, everything's headed for utter chaos ... My
Big Night is loud, silly, intentionally campy, utterly chaotic ... and
so much fun! And while it's probably not director Álex de la Iglesia's
best movie as such, it proves his talent in keeping things under control
while they get out of control, and of bending genres rather mercilessly -
and to quite simply entertain the audience no matter what. And the film
succeeds at that quite handsomely!
