Having just been released from prison, Olya (Viktoriya Korotkova) has
just one objective: To get her daughter Masha (Sofya Krugova) back from
her all-controlling mother Vera (Anna Mikhalkova) - but that's easier said
than done, as Vera isn't happy to let the girl go, something that leads to
the women injuring one another, and Olya ultimately kidnapping Masha
(who's happy about being reunited with her mother by the way) and seeking
refuge by Oleg (Aleksandr Yatsenko), the man who has put her in prison in
the first place, but who's also her ex and probably Masha's father.
However, Oleg isn't a man of high moral standards, so when Vera offers him
quite some money if he finds Olya and Masha, he's quick to sell them to
Vera - only by that time Olya and Masha have made a hasty escape and try
to make it through the woods - with Masha soon taking the lead as Olya
apparently hasn't really thought everything through. But Vera and Oleg are
hot on their trail, and they're armed and determined to get Masha back -
dead or alive, apparently ... Now above synopsis might not read
like it, but No Looking Back is above all else dead funny. Sure,
there's plenty of violence and suspense to make the average thriller fan
happy, but what really makes the movie is its willingness to go
over-the-top and then some, and milk its situations for all the dark fun
they have to offer. That said, the film never falls into the moronic,
takes itself seriously enough as a thriller, and the actors all play it
straight - and that's exactly what makes it such a fun ride.
