Young Robert's (Hubert Milkowski) an immigrant from Poland who has found work
in a Norwegian fish factory - anything but a dream job of course, but the
pay's decent, and there's boarding house run by a Polish woman where many
other immigrants from Poland are staying, who also work at the factory -
so he's quickly integrated into the company. However, he soon feels
strangely attracted to Ivar (Karl Bekele Steinland), the somewhat cocky
adopted son of factory owner Bjorn (Øyvind Brandtzæg) - and vice versa,
as when Ivar learns Robert needs some money, he invites him to DJ for him
at a dance performance he's giving at a fashion store. But he fails to
tell Robert it's actually a drag show in a store for flamboyant to glaring
fashion, he pretty much makes a getaway. He only later tries to make up,
but at first Ivar is little interested, until Robert confesses to him he's
afraid to come out of the closet as gay as he's beaten up in his home
country because of being a homosexual. So the two start a secret affair
together. Then Robert's mother (Edita Torhan) stops by though as she has
run into financial troubles in Poland and now needs a job in Norway to
make enough money to get back on her feet. Now Robert's not too happy
about it, but he gives her abode, even if that gets him into trouble with
his landlady, who now asks him to pay double. Problem is, soon after that
the extra pay at the company gets cut, and the workers are thinking about
unionizing and striking - and Robert's all for the cause, and even Ivar,
always on the rebellish side against his father, joins the picketeers. But
then Robert's mum gets into trouble at her work, and suddenly Robert finds
himself needing work and needing it fast ... The combination of
a gay romance and a labour drama actually works surprisingly well in this
case, as a clever script that effectively interlinks the two topics and
makes each affect the other. On top of that, the film manages to show the
labour conditions in the factory without only going the downbeat drama
route, and even injects some slight humour into the mix every now and
again while making excellent use of its somewhat moody Norwegian
locations. And a very able cast helps to rather expertly bring the story
to live without going full melodrama - all of which is making this a
pretty worthwhile watch.
