Newly weds David (Ian Ogilvy) & Penny (Susan Penhaligon) live upstairs
the bank he works at, when one day his mother (Beryl Reid) makes an unannounced
visit ... which would be bad enough as it is, but porn-dealer Nikos (Stephen
Greif) has picked exactly this day to mix up some adresses & send David
& Penny some illegal porn pictures - made even worse by the fact that
David's boss Mr Bromley (Arthur Lowe) is a deeply conservative porn hunter. So,
to get out of the mess David & Penny drag little cashier Brian (Ronnie
Corbett) into the affair & persuade him - clumsy as he is - to get rid of
the pictures. After many complications he even succeeds - but the very next
day tthe pictures are found in River Thames, & a man fitting his
description (naturally) is wanted for dumping them there. & what's more,
that day a second delivery from Nikos - some roles of hardcore film - arrive at
David's adress, & again Brian, who at this time is pretty strung out, is
left with the task of getting rid of the filth ... which he after some more
complications dumps on the cart of a rag & bone-collector (Sydney Bromley)
... of course they do eventually show up - & are shown - at an auction bank
director Bromley takes David's mother to. David, Penny & Brian meanwhile
have other problems though, as Nikos has sent four boxes of pornbooks, &
Brian, when he calls nikos to send him no more, accidently orders 2 prostitutes
instead. So while - after many more complications - David & Penny
finally drop the books at a waste dump, the hookers (Valerie Leon, Margaret
Logan) come & try to seduce both Brian & bank inspector Needham
(Michael Bates), who has come for a bank inspection (naturally). Thank god
though the 2 of them are full with sleeping pills Penny has given them to keep
them quiet & they hardly notice the girls. David's mother though &
mister Bromley do notice them, despite David's & Penny's best efforts,
& it's only thanks to the fact that the girls recognize Bromley as a
certain Mister Smith that David is let off the hook ... The next day, another
parcel arrives, & Brian, by now totally strung out, takes off on a moped
with it, which leads to a big carchase, with David, his mum & Penny, Mister
Bromley & the police & porn Peddler Nikos & his intended client
Pete (John Bindon), & which ends with openingof the parcel & finding it
to be a digital calculator ... Apart from the overly clichéd
carchase at the end which seems a little tagged on (& probably was), this
is a surprisingly fine comedy comprised of some clever, well-done slapstick
& dry British humour, & which, despite its lurid subject matter,
manages to stay completely innocent.
