Photographer Nop (Jayanama Nopachai) and his businesswoman-wife May (Wanida Termthanaporn) don't have the happiest of marriages - after years of being together, they have drifted apart in almost every aspect, and she has long started an affair with her boss Gon (Chamanun Wanwinwatsara). And yet, she accompanies Nop when he embarks on a camping trip to the jungle for a new photo series. But while Nop becomes more and more sucked into the subject of his photos, the jungle, May feels somehow left out, and her reserved attitude towards nature mirrors her reserved attitude towards her husband. A certain sad looking old tree seems to hold a special fascination for Nop, as he comes back to it time and again ... until suddenly, Nop is gone.

May reports Nop missing to the police, but they seem to have little hope. Ultimately she is picked up by Gon and taken back to the city. Days later, Nop shows up on the couch of their apartment and tells May he has been saved by some local girl. And he has changed too, his sexual cravings have become stronger than ever before, he is able to satisfy May like never before, he doesn't have to eat anymore, and he has developed all these weird urges, like growing a jungle on his own porch. And May likes the new Nop better than the old one ...

Gon tells May he has broken up with his wife and suggests they move in together, but instead May breaks up with him as she has fallen in love with her hubby all over again. Gon grows suspicious though, pays a visit to May and Nop's apartment - and finds no trace of Nop whatsoever. On the contrary, he finds evidence that Nop has indeed never returned from the jungle. Somehow he manages to convince May of that, but she forces him to take her to the jungle to look for Nop. Once in the jungle, May walks to the old sad tree that fascinated Nop quite as much armed with a machete, and she tries to cut it down - no chance of course, and eventually she breaks down from exhaustion ... but she did hurt the nymph (Porntip Papanai) who was living in the tree and who has kept Nop in the jungle for all this time.

Nop finds his fainted wife and carries her back to camp, where he has a talk with Gon, and he convinces him to take May and leave the jungle forever, then go back to his wife, the person who really got hurt in all of this ...

An at times fascinating film: The jungle locations are simply great, and breathtakingly captured by the camera, the story is captivating in its fairy-tale style naivité, and director Pen-Ek Ratanaruang proves himself a master in creating creepy, almost otherworldly atmosphere. Yet Nymph is not a perfect cinema, its intentionally slow pace sometimes gets in the way of its story and effectiveness, its symbolism at times seems to be a bit on the heavy-handed side, and its ending is a disappointing anti-climax more than everything else.

Still well worth a look!
