Highschool freshman Nanami persuades her boyfriend Daisuke to join the
school's Occult Detective
Club with her, despite the fact that he thinks this is just mumbo jumbo.
The club, headed by the mysterious but beautiful Fuyumi, is presently
investigating the deaths of a few students that all had to do with dolls -
and soon enough, Nanami finds herself pursued by dolls as well. Fuyumi
knows only one solution for all of this, she and her whole club (six in
all, including Nanami and Daisuke) have to take a trip to the Doll
Cemetery, a weird parallel world. In the Doll Cemetery, Nanami is soon
seperated from the rest and temporarily possessed by a doll, and before
you know it, two of the club are dead, and some sort of doll-zombies rise
to attack and eat the living, but our heroes manage to survive the ordeal,
and Fuyumi even finds out that all of this has to do with a doll that
Nanami tossed away as a child.
At the gateway (basically symbols drawn with chalk on a floor, as these
occult gateways tend to be) though, the four remaining occult detectives
discover there is only room for three to return to the real world, so the
club's vice president sacrifices himself for the others to return.
Back in the real world, Fuyumi tells Nanami to find the doll she tossed
away and pray for it, then Fuyumi disappears again to the Doll Cemetery
and carry on the fight.
This movie is based on some very nice ideas, and the direction looks
interesting in most parts too (even if the death scenes of the two
clubmembers fail to have any impact at all), but in all, it seriously
lacks interesting characters, let alone character development, so as a
viewer, one feels strangely detached from the onscreen goings-on - which
is a pity because some of the film's plot elements are just so wonderfully
(and intentionally) trashy and bizarre one would so wish this to be a
better movie overall.
