A fight between violent thugs that ends in a (lethal) carcrash stands at the beginning of a gangwar in Mongkok, the most densely populated area of the already densely populated hong Kong.

Eventually, one of the gangbosses tells crooked mobile phones salesman Liu (Suet Lam) to hire him a killer to bump off his opponent from the other gang, so Liu, more interested in the money he could earn than actually doing the job, hires Lai Fu (Daniel Wu), a simpleton from his village in mainland China, who (Liu thinks) would do everything for a few bucks.

But soon, Liu is apprehended by the police, led by officers Milo (Alex Fong) & Brandon (Chin Kar Lok), & without thinking twice, Liu sells Lai Fu to them to get himself out of a squeeze ... but Lai fu is not quite as naive as Liu would like to think, & escapes the cops effortlessly (as they don't even know what he looks like).

He then gets accommodations in a brothel, where he soon saves hooker DanDan (Cecilia Cheung) from getting beaten up foom Walter, one of her tricks. As a sign of gratitude, Dan Dan helps him to escape Walter's revenge. Soon the 2 of them become friends, both being from mainland China, even if either of them is put off by the profession of the other (hooker & killer), & Lai Fu refuses  to become romantically involved with Dan Dan, as he actually came to Hong Kong to look for his fiancée (who unbeknowest was badly injured in the carcrash that has started everything).

The cops meanwhile do everything in their power to get a grip on Lai Fu, but he has little problems staying aloof, as they still have no idea what he's looking like. Eventually they (ab)use Liu to set a trap for him, but Lai Fu has already smelt the rat & instead of falling for the trap he almost kills Liu - being only held back by Dan Dan, who doesn't want him to be a killer.

Later, the police are staking out a motel where Lai Fu is supposed to be, but during this operation, one of them, young, over-ambitious Ben shoots the wrong man, but when the cops try to hush the thing up, they discover the dead man has actually been a big-time drug dealer, a fish way bigger than Lai Fu. So our cops have a little celebration at a cheap café ... right across the street from the motel Lai Fu & Dan Dan are currently staying at. & these 2 think the whole thing is finally over, Lai Fu has even thrown his gun away ... when he happens across a newspaper that tells him his fiancée is in hospital, seriously wounded ... & his world starts to crumble ... not made any better when Walter & his gang visit the hjotel for a little vengeance, & they beat Lai Fu up badly, then Walter rapes Dan Dan.

'It is then that Lai Fu loses his patience, retrieves his gun (from the dust bin right in front of the motel, & shoots Walter, right in front of the eyes of the cops. When overambitious Ben wants to arrest him, Lai Fu shoots him too in a panic, & only before he can also shoot officer Brandon can officer Milo shoot him ... but  he will probably never get over having shot him. At the same time at the hospital, Lai Fu's girlfriend in hospital dies too.

Only Dan Dan gets away & returns to mainland China with Lai Fu's money, but her heart broken more than once

Suspenseful & fast-paced criethirller that refuses to present the audience with glossy pictures, perfect cops or all-powerful gangsters, instead the cops are presented as imperfect, even a bit corrupt, the gangsters are an incompetent bunch, the central killer (Lai Fu) is actually a rookkie who only agrees to kill because he needs money, & the love-interest is a cheap whore - & all this in front of the backdrop of Mongkok, an area populated by petty criminals, thugs & prostitutes. However, tha movie does not judge, making the corrupt cops, the rookie killer & the cheap whore equally likeable, & even treacherous Liu has a sort of loveable streak ... & what's more, the film stays entertaining throughout.
