Jason (Nathyn Masters) is a down-on-his-luck writer looking for an
advance on his new (already written) book, that is just not that great, or
rather not that sellable, and all his attempts to spice it up with
romantic vampires and werewolves only cheapen it. All his bills are
overdue, and whoever he turns to, nobody is willing to give him nearly the
money he's needing ... until his AA-mentor and occasional writing partner
Courtney (Claire 'Fluff' Llewellyn) gets him onto Mara (Gloria John), a
literary agent who's sure to help it make it to the top ... but whoever
Jason asks about Mara, they warn him about her. Still, Jason is desperate,
so he meets with Mara, who really hands him a project and promises him
heaps of money. The project is pretty much just put flesh and his personal
twist on an existing manuscript and sell it as his. Jason doesn't feel
happy about this, as he considers himself a serious author, not someone
who redoes the writing of others, but of course he accepts, as the lure of
money is stronger than his beliefs in this time of need. However, he soon
receives a package with an USB stick that shows the weird demise of the
author of the original script (Kelsey Zukowski), and it makes him see the
manuscript in a new light, as if the author has predicted her own fate.
And as Jason investigates, the story gets creepier and creepier, and also
involves his own ex (Jaclyn Francine) and her mother (Beka), who might
also be the mother of the deceased writer, and more and more he feels like
the pawn in a paranormal game of chess ... The Perfect
Letter is a horror mystery with a deliberately slow approach to its
story, to really build up the creepy potential of the plot rather than
waste it in sudden shocks. Likewise, the direction and camerawork give the
characters and story enough room to develop, also helped by the fact that
director Masters has collected some of the finest actors of his area. And
when it comes to the artist trying to get his project off the groung one
really gets the feeling Masters speaks out of experience. A very nice
one, really!
