For some reasons not yet disclosed, Judge Fulton (Laurence Naismith) invites 2 wealthy playboys, Sir Brett Sinclair (Roger Moore) & Bronx-bre & -educated Danny Wilde (Tony Curtis) to a hotel in Monte Carlo ... & teh 2 can't stand each other upon first sight, & first get into a wild car race, then beat the leaving daylights out of each other in a fancy restaurant ... until they are  apprehended by the police.

However, the cops don't bring them to the next precinct ubt to the Judge's place, who offers them, instead of 90 days in jail, to work for him on a simple mission. They have to find Maria (Omogen Hassall), positively identify her by her birthmark 6 then find out her real name ... & since Maria is very pretty, this doesn't sound too hard a task for 2 womanizers like Danny & Brett.

& soon too, the girl is found & makes friends with them ... however, what Brett & Danny don't know is that the girl is closely watched over, by some goons who don't like one bit that both Brett & Danny show an interest int he girl ... & it's not just jealousy.

Soon enough, the goons get Mary away, & send a gang of thugs to teach Brett & Danny, who are waiting for Mary in the fancy restaurants they have already taken apart once before, a lesson. However, our heroes can of course defeat the thugs, then finally break into Mary's room & find out her true identity, Michelle Dupont.

Bringing this information to the judge, they hae to learn that the judge has known all along & only tested their skills as investigators, as he wants to use them as fighters in his private war against crime. Brett & Danny feel abused, but it's too late to quit now, since the bad guys have already found tehm at the judge's place & try to gun them down, but are defeated.

& why all of this ?

Because Mary/Michelle is the little sister of Robert Dupont (Michael Godfrey), a dangerous racketeer who has faked his own death, & now the judge wants to bring him to justice. Danny 6 Brett feel even more abused & leave the judge alone to fight his fight for right, & soon enough, the judge is kidnapped by Dupont's men. However, Brett & Danny don't get far before their conscience sets in, & they go after Dupont's men to free the judge, withthe result that they are soon locked into a winecellar with the judge, & Dupont plans to cold bloodedly shoot them, despite his sister's protests.

Of course, our heroes fight their way out, but in the end it's Mary/Michelle, who saves their lives when shooting her own brother.

The Persuaders ! was never really high on originality, in fact it was highly derivative of the James Bond series (which would soon be taken over by Roger Moore) and of any number of then popular mystery films & series, which quite often would be written much better. What makes The Persuaders ! special though is that the series refuses to take itself seriously, & Roger Moore & Tony Curtis make a great, almost anagonistic couple, likeable even to those who don't like either of them on their own. Of course, some outrageous early-1970's fashion, decadent 70's lifestyle & the obligatory goodlooking girls don't hurt either.

This episode, Overture, might very well be the best of the series, since the concept is still fresh & doesn't show the signs of wear & self-reference some of the later episodes do.
