Rudy likes to spend his nights in nightclubs, being a big spender
(thanks to his rich father) and a ladies' man. Eventually, he falls in love
with nightclub dancer Meng Mey, but also eventually, his father expels him
from the family and cuts off his money supply. Plus a coffin is delivered
to the nightclub Rudy's at, in which Rudy finds his own dead body. After
this experience, Rudy tries to mend his ways, says the nightclubs good-bye,
gets a job at coffinmaker Ah Buen's workshop, and tries to get rid of the
cursed coffin in which he saw his own body which is now also stored at the
workshop. However, over time, the coffin develops a life of its own and
eventually even starts to threaten Rudy. What Rudy doesn't know of
course is that Ah Boen has used black magic to curse the coffin because he
wanted to get his hands on Rudy's girlfriend Mey Meng, and he now uses
some more black magic to marry her, even though she and Rudy
are still in love with each other. One day, Rudy's father dies, and Rudy
sees this as a great opportunity to get rid of the coffin, placing his
father inside ... but the coffin rejects dad. On the way home from dad's
funeral, Rudy is run over by a car, and promptly buried in his coffin. But
the coffin is not yet finished with the world of the living yet, leaving the
grave to kill Ah Boen and using some hypnotic powers to drag Meng Mey
inside with Rudy, so they can spend eternity together. The
exotic period (1959) setting of the film, the in an old fashioned way stylish
direction and the rather original plot all can't hide that in all, the
movie is badly paced, is lacking in the scares department, and as the
film's main monster, the coffin looks unintentionally silly rather
than threatening. That said, if you're a fan of silly trash and you can
sit through the rather boring first half, you will be rewarded by some
really outrageous scenes involving a coffin.
